The iconic orange lights that illuminated the University Centre food court for more than 35 years will be sold by auction to benefit U of G’s United Way fundraising campaign.

A live auction on Saturday, Nov. 24, will feature 75 of the pendant-style ceiling lights. Viewing begins at 5 p.m. during a retro–themed reception at the Brass Taps featuring 1970s music, cocktails and menu. The auction begins at 7 p.m. in the UC Courtyard with auctioneer David Moore, a 1983 agriculture grad and owner of David Moore & Associates Auctions/Appraisals in Guelph.

For nostalgia buffs: “Meet you under the orange lights” became part of campus vernacular soon after the University Centre was opened in fall 1974. The Nord-Lite ceiling fixtures were designed by Sven Middelboe and produced by Audiola for Danish lighting company Nordisk Solar Compagni. They were replaced with more energy-efficient lighting this summer.
