The College of Management and Economics (CME) hosted an event in Toronto Oct. 16 on sustainable food systems and the role for business. It featured a panel discussion moderated by George Stroumboulopoulos, the United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP) Canadian Ambassador Against Hunger.

The panel included U of G professors Sylvain Charlebois, CME’s associate dean, and Evan Fraser, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Global Human Security, along with Gawaher Atif, WFP’s deputy director of private sector partnerships. CME dean Julia Christensen-Hughes gave the introductions and brought remarks.

Fraser, a geography professor whose research focuses on food security under economic globalization and climate change, discussed the gravity of the global food crisis and strategies and solutions.

Charlebois, a professor in food distribution and policy, talked about positive changes that have already taken place, such as trade and agricultural policies and innovations such as genetically modified food.

The event was targeted to CME alumni, friends and supporters.
