Chemistry professor Peter Tremaine will receive this year’s Hugh M. Huffman Memorial Award for long-term contributions to thermodynamics involving calorimetry or thermochemistry. He will receive the award during The Calorimetry Conference in July.

Tremaine studies water under high temperature and pressure with applications in next-generation nuclear power reactors intended to help meet clean-energy needs of a growing world population.

He runs one of only about 20 labs worldwide working on aqueous solution chemistry above 200 C and equipped with highly accurate instruments needed for these studies.

Huffman was a pioneer in heat capacity measurements and a prominent founder of the annual North American conference.
