The future looks bright for students at the University of Guelph. New lighting fixtures are being installed in both hockey arenas, as well as the gymnasiums. Installation is scheduled for completion in early January.

The metal halide, high-intensity discharge lamps that have been hanging in the Gryphon Centre and Athletic Complex for more than 25 years are being replaced with a modern LED high-bay light system that will significantly improve the playing experience for both athletes and spectators. Aside from providing a much cleaner and brighter light, each fixture can also be individually controlled from a computer system and is fully dimmable. The new lighting system has a long list of benefits, ranging from the ability to now ‘spotlight’ a member of a starting lineup, to improving the quality of lighting for broadcasting purposes.

This renovation also marks the first major project of The Green Gryphon Initiative, which aims to advance sustainability at U of G. Through planned resource conservation and community engagement strategies, the initiative will significantly reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
